Good Day everyone. We are blessed with another amazing day on this earth. The passing of the seasons is actually mind tripping, To think 17 weeks ago crops were attempting to grow in dust and long hot summer days. Now we are harvesting some of the results between rain showers and short cooler days. The evidence of climate change all around us. No frost yet....whoop, whoop. The natural season extension is certainly helpful. We did not expect to still be harvesting tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, herbs and salad greens in the middle of October in central Wisconsin. Usually those crops are over and frozen by mid September. Each year certain crops produce wonderfully and each year some fail.
Winter squashes, purple, white and purple top turnips, watermelon, green, purple and daikon radishes, green and red cabbage harvests are all upon us. These are all storage crops for winter. The trick now is a balance of time. Will we be able to get them all harvested before they are frozen in the ground with the current labor shortage? Time will tell. The Brussels sprouts are still not producing any green orbs. There is an acre of them. Thousands of dollars to just till back into the soil. Sad for this farm. We depend on that income to pay for the heat in the greenhouses for the winter. We are provided with much from our land and will do our best to use what has been given to us.
