It seems a hot sticky August like week is ahead of us. We have good news and bad news. Last week we received 3.25" of rain is the good news of sorts. The rain came down in less than an hour, so most of the it ran off. As you can see by the photo, Greenhouse 4 took a hit. It was a rather dramatic situation. The storm on Monday came up faster than we could roll the sides down on Greenhouse 3 and 4. One of our employees, Myda, tried her best to save them. She was able to roll down the sides of Greenhouse 3 and was working on Greenhouse 4 when a 67 mph wind hit with a downpour of rain and hail. To say the least her breath was taken away and she appeared like a wet almost drowned cat. Metal poles and whipping plastic coming at you is not fun. Before the next storm arrived we had to cut the plastic off so the flapping 6 mil 100' sheet of plastic didn't damage the structure even more.
Some more good news. All the summer squash in every shape from round yellow balls, two tone zephyr, yellow crooknecks to slender zucchini in green and yellow skins are producing wonderful. Must not forget trying out squash blossoms as well. Also our Amish neighbors (with a greenhouse still in tack) had an over abundant supply of heirloom and red tomatoes to share with us.
As always have a great week. Stay hydrated....and remember you are always welcome to come visit the farm.
