Happy sunny and perfect summer day to you all. We feel lucky to be "up north" today with so many worldly temperatures triple digit. It was an interesting weather week. Witnessed a morning western sky rainbow. Usually, when you think about it rainbows occur in the eastern sky. Takes most of the day for a thunderstorm to build. On Wednesday morning at 6:30am while loading your Farm Share boxes in the van for delivery a double rainbow in the western sky was spotted. Super unusual. Later that same day there was a downpour with huge rain drops while the sun was shining brightly on the corn field across the road. The rain drops danced upward on the road in a shimmer and the corn field looked florescent with the shining rain sliding down the broad leaves. In the same instant the humidity and temperatures went above 100 degrees in the greenhouses and we had to come out for a breath of air. Uff-dah!
As the above photo shows Leah, Gail and Myda have been busy with the summer squash harvesting. We harvest every other day from now until it freezes or the squash just give up. We harvest all sizes. Chefs like choices. Big ones for shredding into zucchini bread, small ones for steaming, medium ones for grilling. blossoms to stuff or color in a sorbet. The extra super large baseball bat sized ones that get missed are thrown aside. Later they are picked up and fed to Myda's pigs. Usually we wear long sleeves and long pants to protect our arms and legs from the wickedly scratchy leaves. That is certainly a challenge on a hot sunny day!
A reminder that has been forgotten to be mentioned, because to us, it is obvious....please remember to wash all produce. We may rinse off or wipe off field dirt but nothing should be considered table ready.
As always have a great week and please make a trip out to the farm to see us.
