[CSA Update] Welcome to week 3

Posted on September 4th, 2020 by Ida DeFrancesco

Labor Day Weekend 2020 takes on a special place this year with everything we are living through. Celebrating the hard work we each do and taking time to enjoy a moment with family. In the late 1800s the American worker had 12-hour work days, seven days a week. President Cleveland created a national holiday for the working class in 1894. For many of us, it is how we send off summer with the last three day weekend and prepare to settle down into a new fall routine. It's wonderful to see a kind forecast that will let us all sit outside for a meal or just to watch chickens and not work on the to do list.

Looking through the harvest this week my mind circles around all the delicious treats we can make. Cucumer and tomato salad, fish and fennel, sweet potato fries with burgers, crisp and spicey salads with a light dressing, and grilled fruit - sounds like the makings of a great party to me.

2020 tied for the hottest summer of record in the last 115 years. 1973 experienced the same rough average temperatures. 2020 also set a new record of having the highest number of days reaching or exceeding 90 degrees with 39 days so far. 1983 was the previous record-breaking year at 38 days, while a normal season is 17 days out of the summer. And there is still room to soar past the 90s in the next few weeks left of summer.
