[CSA Update] Welcome to week 10

Posted on July 14th, 2022 by Ida DeFrancesco

I have started to pick my sweet corn. Not all corn is the same - I hope you like the five types I planted this summer. I plant every week to stagger the harvest and to help buffer when we have extreme heat waves or droughts.

Corn was taken out of the wild thousands of years ago, and modern corn depends on humans to plant and maintain it. In the 1700s, the first "sweet corn" was developed. We harvest sweet corn while still immature or when it is in its milk stage (poke your fingernail into the kernel, and you will see milky liquid).

When I plant the seeds, they look like a dry corn kernel. I expect to get one plant per seed and one good ear per plant.

The silks that get stuck in your teeth do have a purpose. There is one thread-like silk for each potential kernel on the corn cob. A missing kernel indicates that a single silk wasn't pollinated.

Before you smear butter over those warm, sweet golden kernels and take a big bite - try it without any extra toppings. Just enjoy that natural goodness of fresh picked. Then, add the butter!
