October! Wow, can you believe it? We have been at this since May, but are just two weeks into our Fall harvest. We are in desperate need of rain. We were hoping that some of the rain from hurricane Ian would head our way, but unfortunately it did not. We have not received rain in over a month. Our green beans look so good, but without any additional rain, they will dry up on the vine. We have planted broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale and cabbage - but their success depends on how much rain we receive. We just do not have the ability to run irrigation to all our fields right now. Please, pray for rain! The Lord knows what we need.
In better news, we do have lots of turnip greens and mustard greens coming in right now. Our family loves to cook them down and serve with a bowl of beans and cornbread - don't forget the slaw! It's one of our favorite fall meals! We also have 12 oz bottles of maple syrup available. We love oatmeal on cool mornings with a splash of maple syrup. It's so filling and warm! We have so many of our winter squash coming in right now...they are all delicious roasted - and we love them as hearty soups too. They are nice keepers and will store well for several months in a cold, dark space. Over the winter, we store many in our garage and they keep well there.
Mark your calendars for Saturday November 5th. This will be our annual Family Farm Day. It's a wonderful time to see the farm, meet your farmers and see where and how your food is grown. We will still have some produce available at that time, so bring your family and enjoy walking the fields and picking your own farm share that day. We will have pony rides and lots of animals for you to see and pet. It's a great day to understand what we do and why we do it! Please, come see us!
