Savoring Summer on the Farm!

Posted on July 26th, 2019 by Featherstone Farm

For six or seven seasons now I have been writing to you giving small updates of life on the farm. I once had farming explained to me as less of a pure circular rotation, and more of a corkscrew, meaning that in every rotation you find yourself in a similar, but assuredly different place.

I notice this especially with big annual tasks. When we are laughing and complaining about our spines during beet weeding, when we are clear picking the final heads of broccoli "one" (one being the first planting or succession of many planted for the season's harvest), or getting ready to mow off the first succession of sweet corn. A year can fly by if we aren’t careful, if we don’t take time to look up every once and a while and enjoy the view.

Although I believe that there are few things more productive than a busy human, I also believe it's good to take some time to smell the roses. So crack a cold one, call a loved one, and enjoy life.   As the modern philosopher Tim McGraw so brilliantly wrote, “When it's hot, eat a root beer popsicle. Shut off the AC and roll the windows down. Let that summer sun shine. Always stay humble and kind."  Summer on the farm is fast, as it probably is for you, too, so we hope you're enjoying the harvest and taking the time to savor!

As always thank you for your support. There is definitely a learning curve with the new “choice” system, but we are excited to be in it with you.

Thank you so much,

P.S!  Here's a look at one of the ways we are indeed savoring the summer, by participating in the annual Rushford Day's Parade!  It was a fun night for all as we tossed cucumbers (and candy!) to our fellow Rushford neighbors!
