Farm Happenings for August 26, 2020

Posted on August 23rd, 2020 by Claudia Frey

Good morning everyone!

Friday's rain was well received in the garden, now for the return of some heat and we will be in to tomatoes like gangbusters!  Tomatoes are ripening slowly, and we will continue to rotate them in to your shares.  Crookneck and zucchini and green beans are also coming on, and will be rotated in to shares as they ripen.

Green kohlrabi made its appearance last week, and will be in shares again this week.  Jim calls them the apple of the garden, peeling them and eating them whole and raw like an apple.  I like them in my salad, and roasted with other vegetables.

We found out this week that our Pink Champagne onions can not be classified as Certified Organic this year.  We purchase starts for our bulbing onions, and while these starts are non-gmo, and are grown organically in our garden, they can not be considered certified because they did not come from a certified grower.  With COVID-19 shortages in seed and growing stock, we bought from a new supplier, and they were not certified organic.  Because of this, your Pink Champagne onions will now be wrapped in freezer paper in your bags.  This is in keeping with our Organic Certification requirements.  All other onions; the bunching that were in your shares, grown from organic seed on our farm, and the Cortlands that you have not received in your shares yet, are Certified Organic.  This only pertains to the Pink Champagne Onions.  We will work to ensure that all bulbing onion starts are certified organic before we purchase next year.  We are sorry for the inconvenience of extra paper in your share bags.

We hope you all have a wonderful week!  It looks like sun and upper 70's are in our forecast, enjoy!

Madeline and Emily are off to college; online, in Pullman, COVID-19 isolating at the moment.
