Farm Happenings for August 10, 2023

Posted on August 5th, 2023 by Greg Stainton

Happy August everyone!

We've gotten into a nice rhythm with our farming routines:  seeding, weeding, feeding and so on. Most things are running as expected and once in a while we get a little surprise.

Our little Bresse chickens are hatching out once a week right on schedule.  We bought a few new sows (a Duroc and two Berks) earlier in the season and noticed the Duroc looks like she is about to farrow so have her in the barn to give her a little extra TLC when the little babies arrive.  Durocs have the cutest little floppy ears.  We will be sure to post when the little ones arrive:). When we have produce that is past its prime, we divide it up and feed it to the ducks, chickens and pigs.  Their absolute favourite is tomato day.  Yesterday when Matty and Tej went to feed the pigs tomatoes, Spot, one of our Berkshire sows, did not show up to the party.  She is always first to the table so we knew something was up and went to investigate which is when we found these little cuties in the forest!

For veggies this week we have a few new additions:  Sweet Peppers and Asian Eggplants.  We have only small amounts of them for the first harvest week but the plants are healthy and we expect to be harvesting them continuously for several months.  The chickens have started laying a bit more now that the temperatures have dropped a bit so if you have missed out on eggs recently, you may be in luck this week:).

Wishing everyone a great long weekend.

Kate and Greg.
