May31-June 1, 2024 Farm Happening

Hello Members!

It is that time of the week again...the Farm Stand is open now until Monday at 8AM for orders.

This is our fourth year working in the same market garden beds so this year we are increasing our emphasis on building up and improving the soil that nourishes all of the food we grow.  We have been producing our own compost to amend the soil before planting and this year we have added in a robust cover cropping schedule.  Cover crops (like in this week's picture) build nutrients in the soil while improving the soil structure.  This year, we have planned cover crops early in the season for any beds that are not planted until mid June, between crops when we have early and late crops planned in the same bed, and for the entire season in about half of our beds to help to more fully replenish the soil (and make more room beside our U-Pick flower beds!!)

This week we have lots of delicious spring flavours with a variety of fresh herbs and salad mixes as well as green onions, perfect for making a few of our family's favourite foods, fried rice and scallion pancakes.  If you are looking for recipes, here is a link to one of my favourite chef's recipes for scallion pancakes:  Serious Eats Scallion Pancakes.  You can also check out our  March 11th Instagram post on Fried Rice.

Do you have other favourite ways to use some of your spring basket ingredients?  Post them on the Harmony Farm Recipe Sharing group.  We will try to add notes to products throughout the season to let folks know when there are recipe ideas on the group page for folks to try out!

The gardens are continuing to increase their bounty so we will open up an additional five spring shares this week, feel free to spread the word!  Please remember to also share your refer a friend code if someone you refer signs up for a main season share so that you will both receive $25 farm credit in thanks for your help with promoting our farm:).

Wishing everyone a great week.

Your Farmers,

Kate and Greg.
