Farm Happenings for week of June 9, 2020

Posted on June 2nd, 2020 by Harvie Admin

The rhythm of the season is just beginning. But here at Harvie Farms Pittsburgh, we are learning so much each week about how to improve your farm share experience. We are so grateful for your support of our start up business.

Butcher's Choice Specialty Steaks

For those of you getting the Butcher Box once a month, I wanted to give a little more detail about the Butcher's Choice Specialty Steaks. These are various cuts of steak that Neal Salyards from Jubilee Hilltop Ranch has enjoyed selling to restaurants over the years. Now, with the restaurant business not what it was, we are able to offer these unique steaks directly to you. If you choose this option, you will receive two steaks from one of these cuts: Hanger, Bavette, Denver, Sierra, or Oyster. We hope you enjoy them!

Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who filled out our online survey after week 1. We really appreciate the honest and constructive feedback. Feel free to keep it coming--whether it's in survey or more direct form. We are a small team, so thanks for your patience with our replies. Know that we are doing are best to address each inquiry.

On The Farm

Hard to believe that just a few weeks ago our farmers were dealing with frost conditions. Now May has turned warm with some great weather for farming. But as our Clarion River Organics growers found out last week, it only takes a few minutes of hail to wipe out fields of tender greens. Their romaine, collards, and kale were all damaged to varying degrees during a sudden hail storm. But farms finds security in having many crops each season. So while we are missing romaine, collards, and lacinato kale this week; we are also adding in small amounts of other greens like radicchio, escarole, tatsoi, Red Russian kale, and frisee. We hope you will get a chance to give one a try.

We also want to make sure you know that the boxes will not be so "greens heavy" forever. While the greens do well in the early and late seasons, we are as excited as you are as we anticipate summer crops of all kinds. It's going to be awesome!

Packaging Returns

We appreciate everyone who has kept their box, thermal liner, and ice pack in tact to return to us. While I know some boxes were accidentally not picked up this past week, we are working to get all of them collected. Thanks for setting out those items. But a reminder that we do not want other items like bags, cartons, twist ties, etc. Just a closed box with the liner and ice pack inside.

Take care out there,

Neil Stauffer, on behalf of the Harvie Farms Pittsburgh team
