Farm Box Happenings for Week of February 8, 2021

Posted on February 3rd, 2021 by Harvie Admin

Our team is highly motivated to find the best local products we can get for your boxes. Even in winter we are finding new items, new farmers, and new opportunities to improve your farm boxes. Here are a few highlights for the coming week:

* Red & Green Cabbage from Clarion River Organics. These will be our "Iron Chef" items in our Facebook Harvie Farms Pittsburgh Community. Come join the fun and show off your cabbage recipes next week. We will be watching #harviefarmspittsbugh and #cookingwithharvie to see what you whipping up in the kitchen.

* Melrose and Fuji Apples from Woolf Farms. This is our first time working with Dale Woolf and his family. You may know them from the various Pittsburgh farmers markets that they attend. One of our only Ohio farms, we want to highlight their Melrose apples, which Dale calls "Ohio's apple". It is a cross between a Jonagold and Red Delicious and was developed and first grown in Wooster, Ohio during WWII. This is a great baking apple and also highly regarded for savory cooking. Flavor profile is sweet, tart, and slightly acidic.

* Also don't miss out on the Woolf Farms Frozen Blueberries, which will only be around for a short time this winter.

* Were you one of the lucky ones to get a fresh potted herb last week? Well good news either way, we are stocking up on more of them. We will have an assortment of Potted Herbs from the greenhouses of the Drew Mathieson Center on the North Side of Pittsburgh. Look for Parsley, Sage and Rosemary. We recommend putting them on a sunny windowsill and cutting leaves off of them as you need them.

* Organic Maitake and Royal Trumpet Mushrooms from Phillips Mushroom Farms in Eastern PA. We love how excited everyone is about mushrooms. We are stocking more than ever before this week. We hope you get a chance to enjoy them!

* Speaking of stocking up, we have Pequea Valley yogurt available in higher quantities this week. If you haven't tried it, you don't know what you're missing. Consider adding a vanilla, plain, or maple quart into your box.

For those of you getting an add on share:

Coffee Add-on Share La Prima Paulie’s Blend is their perennial best seller. It combines the full bloom of their Dark Roast with a subtly earthy toned wet-hulled coffee to create a taste to be enjoyed by those who prefer traditional coffees.

Bread Add-On Share Red Fife Sourdough. The bread has a wonderful nutty, slightly sweet flavor that works well in many settings. Red Fife Batard is made using organic heritage red fife grain grown on Mediterra's own land in Arizona. The entire milling process is done in-house using traditional stone-ground milling equipment. Natural levain (sourdough) starter is added, giving this loaf a subtle, tangy bite. Use it in place of a traditional sourdough bread, paired with your favorite meats and cheeses, or simply toast and enjoy.

Be safe and eat well!
