We’re winding down!
It’s the last week of the weekly CSA shares! Although we will be shaking things up with a new monthly farm share offering (details coming soon), the farm is still gradually shutting down as scheduled. Cold conditions are creeping in! The natural product of a lack of warmth is taking effect! Simply put… it’s too cold to be growin’.
Let’s back up: “How can this be?” you might be asking yourself after what you just read. Monthly shares? Too cold for growin’?
Let me explain. You know how you wind down in the evening? Picture this: It’s time to relax, you’ve got all your cozy clothes on, but you remember the laundry needs to be switched. So, you walk through the kitchen to tend to your laundry, and all of the sudden there are dishes still on the counter that need to be washed. Now you remember all those texts you forgot to reply to throughout the day. Uh oh… Some of them were work related. Now your laptop is open and you’re playing with a budget or something. But Netflix is still paused upstairs, and that popcorn is getting cold.
Winding down on the farm is much the same! The harvest list has gotten smaller, which gives us the impression that we can finish up our task list with time to spare. Suddenly we remember that it’s nice to have vegetables available for the last couple of weeks of the CSA...so we spend even MORE time harvesting three times what we would normally harvest so that turnips, cilantro, and bok choy can be available for just a little longer. Then we remember all the storage radish that needs to be cropped out before the temperature drops next week.
That being said, Hawkins farm has lots of vegetables that are being properly stored in our handy dandy walk-in cooler! Woohoo! We know that we have beets, radishes, cabbage, carrots, and kohlrabi for days. And we're excited about what partner farms such as Berry Hill and Country Gardens have growing in their greenhouses. So be on the lookout for a December Harvie email!
It’s not been all rushing around thinking a break is around the corner. There’s been plenty of space for nostalgic final season goodbyes. Just look at me and Kimberly with the scallions! The last of the large, lanky scallions were picked this week, and they had us thinking we did a pretty good job staying organized this season.
In other winding-down related news: did you know that even when it’s cold and snowy, the farm still don’t stop? That’s right, folks. Last week we put garlic in the ground, and it’s gonna take all winter and spring for it to do its thing in the ground! Garlic will be back next June / July, with varieties that work well for us on Hawkins farm such as Kindy, Inchelium Red, and Lorz Italian, as well as some new varieties (that may or may not take to the soil).
But it’s the last of the weekly shares. Have I made myself clear? And it’s gonna look different! Since we deliver on Thursdays, and Thursday falls on a pretty big national holiday this week, expect your final main season delivery to arrive on Wednesday. Just in time for Thanksgiving!
And speaking of Thanksgiving, it’s not too late to grab a turkey! If you follow this link right here, you’ll have one more opportunity for you to pick yourself up a Hawkins-raised bird on Sunday. You can get a fresh turkey then, so no need to plan time to thaw! Plus, Farmer Jeff himself claims that Hawkins turkeys are so good you don’t even need a brine. The whole family will want to gobble it right up!
Gobble gobble,
