Weeding
Staying ahead of the weeds is the name of the game in vegetable farming. Managing the weeds well means keeps the weeds in check before the crops are ever planted. We start by rotating the crops grown in each field to disrupt the natural cycle of weeds that germinate. If we start with a clean slate, we're off to a good start.
Out next step is to get the crop established as quickly as possible, so it has the best chance to outgrow the weeds. Sometimes we do this by raising plants in the greenhouse, planting primed seed in the field, or carefully choosing when and how deep we plant seeds in the soil.
As soon as the crop has been planted, we start cultivating the soil with a variety of tools to kill the germinating weeds. This cultivation sometimes start before the actual crop emerges from the soil. It's always good to have a variety of tools on hand, and we have a variety of cultivators that attach to the tractor so we can pick the right tool for the job.
