Summer Share: Week 16

Posted on September 16th, 2021 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

This Week's Highlights: We've officially passed peak tomato season. There may be a few tomatoes available next week, but the end of tomato season is near. Sweet peppers (and hot peppers) are reaching their peak. We grow 3 varieties - a red bell, red Italian, and yellow Italian. The yellow Italians - hands down - have the best flavor raw.

What We're Cooking: I'll be cooking up this broccoli cheddar soup with cheesy croutons this week. I love that this recipe uses the stems of the broccoli in the base of the soup. So good!

From Our Farm Partners: Aronia Juice and Aronia Jam are available from Hilltop Community Farm in LaValle. The juice is 100% Steam Extracted Aronia Juice with a hint of organic sugar. Farmer Erin recommends enjoying a morning sip of this superfruit, adding to your smoothie, or pairing with sparkling water or spirits.

Apple share members will be receiving certified organic Liberty apples. The Liberty apple has crunchy white flesh with a mildly tart flavor. It is part of the “McIntosh style” apple group, sweet-tart, dense, and juicy.

Veggie Forecast: Next week's shares will have sweetheart cabbages and spaghetti squash. There will be a break from broccoli for a couple of weeks. While we did not grow potatoes this year, we will be picking up organic potatoes (red, yellow, and blue!) from Driftless Organics in Soldiers Grove next week. Potatoes will be available starting week 17.

Happy eating!
