Farm Notes, Vol. 22, No. 9 is online! Read about the wonderful world of food preservation and what it means to us on the farm.
There were three frost scares in a row this past week, and each night one of the more tender crops (basil, flowers, beans) got a little bit of damage, but in the end almost everything survived. We didn't worry too much, partly because we just didn't have time to worry, and we got lucky. With all those cold nights, the summer vegetables just curled their toes and closed their eyes tight and waited for daylight. Meanwhile, the kale and collards were dancing in the dark. This is heaven for them.
Working in this gorgeous weather fills us with a feeling of privilege and joy. We set goals and we exceed them because it is so easy to keep going. At this writing we have picked up 13 out of 22 rows of sweet potatoes. We are moving mountains without sweating a drop, practically. We are starting to distribute sweet potatoes to the CSA but you should know that they will taste better and better over time. Right now they are just okay, but soon they will be amazing. If you want to keep them on your counter for a few more days, they will probably get sweeter as the starch turns to sugar.
