Good morning on this beautifully cool and damp morning.
Not only will this give the veggies a nice drink, but will be a nice break for the animals as well. When it is hot and sunny during the day, the cows leave the pasture and sprawl out in the barn for some shade and siesta. And though they may be resting, they never seem to be asleep. (I had a chat with my dad a few years ago, who has been working with cattle for over 60 years, he swears he has never seen a cow asleep.)
This cool weather and rain will be good for the pasture as well. We rotationally graze the cattle, which means we move them through pastures as they are mowed down to fresh pasture. This helps keep the pasture heathy with breaks to regrow, helps keep pest/parasite pressures down, and helps extend our grazing season through the hotter dry months, as well as the fall. This week we will move them onto a fresh pasture, and hopefully by next weekend, welcome back our borrowed bull Joker to the herd to work his magic. Joker did a 'bang' up job last year, and knocked the ladies up 125% (twins!)
Some newer veggies in the harvest this week as well. Some early beets, kohlrabi, and hopefully some green onions and carrots on the list soon!
Thanks again!
