It's June and we're starting to look ahead to the summer, when we give ourselves and our fields a break. The greenhouse is gradually emptying out and we just received a shipment of cover crop seeds for the west bank property. Cover crops are fast growing, nutrient rich plants whose sole purpose is to improve the soil while cash crops are on a break. We'll be cover cropping whole sections over the summer to add nutrients and organic matter and keep weeds down. It will be a welcome relief as we anticipate the next month will be a battle against bugs and/or weeds.
We do still have plenty of good food coming your way from our farm and a couple others. We're very excited to be adding blackberries from Poché Family Farm, and will continue getting their luscious Creole tomatoes while they're available. Compostella Farm is still contributing their beautiful salad greens to our shares, and we're still rolling in cukes, zukes, squash, herbs, and now peppers.
We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.
Annie and Cheryl
PS - Don't forget to bring back those micro greens containers!
