It's time for week THREE of our CSA season. By now, you all probably have an idea how the website and CSA shares work. If you still have questions, please let us know.
One specialty item that will be in some of your boxes this week is Minutina (also called buckshorn due to the shape of it's leaf). If you have ever enjoyed our snappy salad mix, then you might have seen minutina before. If not, it may be entirely new to you. Here's the deal: minutina is a green that has been grown in the US for a long time as a unique culinary flavor or garnish, but in colonial times it was cultivated as a medicinal herb. It is in the plantain family, which happen to be nutritional powerhouses and used for several natural remedies (if you don't already know about the healing powers of plantain, you should totally look it up!). Minutina has a subtly distinct flavor that resembles parsley or kale. It is often enjoyed fresh in salads...tossed with other greens as it has a nice crunch...that can be a bit much if it's eaten by itself, raw. You can also enjoy minutinia cooked. Try adding it into soups, making a sauce, topping a pasta dish or flavoring jelly.
We can't wait to see what creative ways you find to use it!
We had some hail last week. It hailed for about 10 minutes. There's nothing quite like the sinking feeling in your stomach while watching the hailstones fall and bounce off the ground. We sustained some damage to our outdoor crops...peas, apples and zucchini (which you might see a little evidence of this week). Thankfully the damage was fairly minimal considering the devastation we have had in the past.
We hope you are all managing to stay cool out there in these warm temperatures! We are thankful for the afternoon showers that help to cool the plants and give some relief...though the humidity is something we are definitely not used to. Have a safe weekend and we will see you on Monday!!
