Another week is in the books! We have plowed some more fields, and prepped ground that will be where we plant our delicious tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. We will be planting potatoes this coming week, which will keep us very busy. Long Island used to have over 30,000 acres of potatoes grown on it!! This year their will be less then 1,000 acres of potatoes planted which is a sad milestone for our island. It is a major part of our history and their are only a few of us still maintaining that heritage and tradition.
Our family has been growing potatoes on Long Island for over 90+ years and this winter I had the question. How many pounds of potatoes has the Zilnicki Family produced on Long Island!?! Go head, take a guess!!... Well our rough estimate was.. between 1.1 and 1.3 BILLION pounds of potatoes!!!!! YUP, that is a real number and crazy to think about and we are super proud of that feat!
Enjoy the goodies and enjoy your week!
