Hello CSA Members!

We got a 2 plus inch rain on Friday night that really perked everything up and gave everyone a sigh of relief.  Let's just hope we can keep that up!  The tomatoes are turning and you will see them in the box this week.  We are taking a week off of bell peppers to let them grow a bit more until harvesting again, but we will be putting either cayenne or jalapeno in the box this week.  The  cucumbers are still at an all time high of harvesting and the summer squash are eeking along.  I am sure we will see bigger harvests this week with the rain we got on Friday night.  Sweet corn will be in the box next week and melons are right around the corner.

Our October Fall Shares are OPEN NOW!!

The Fall share is either a 4 week full share or a 2 week (every OTHER week) half share for the month of October (7th-28th) You can expect a similar amount of produce but focused on all the fall/winter items like carrots, beets, potatoes, garlic, onions, rutabage, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, greens, kale/collards, winter squash, diakon radish, depending on freezes radish and turnips.

Hello mushroom lovers and farm supporters!

This week we have shiitake for you! Shiitake is the main thing we grow on our farm, all on logs. Shiitake grown on logs are the best quality shiitake you can get. Shiitake are robust, meaty, and full of umami flavor.

Our suggested recipe this week is Shiitake Spring Rolls – perfect for all this hot weather! https://northwoodmushrooms.com/2017/08/25/recipe-shiitake-spring-rolls/  We just used shiitake to make a breakfast frittata which was very yummy. We had leftover shiitake that we had sauteed in a little oil, that’s it – no salt or pepper or anything – and we just ate those out of a bowl. So good!!

If you are interested in growing shiitake yourselves, this year we are selling our fourth-year shiitake logs. They make great borders for a garden and will produce shiitake when the conditions are right, for years to come! Each log is about four feet long and we’re selling them for $5 each. It does mean a trip out to our farm to pick some up so if anyone is interested, please let us know!

Enjoy your mushrooms!

What you may see in your box this week:

White Fresh Onions- These are a really great onion to slice onto a sandwich or into a salad.  Or better yet, a BLT!  These are not cured so they will need to be refrigerated to stay fresh.  You can eat the green part, too!

Golden and Red Beet Bunch- Golden beets are a little sweeter and less "earthy" than red beets.  I love to cube, steam and cool to put on a fresh salad.

Beet and Quinoa recipe

Hot Pepper- Red Cayenne or Green Jalapeno- Great for a fresh salsa with the tomatoes and you can put some chopped up cucumbers in there, too.

Jalapeno Green Beans

Cucumbers (several)-  Still a glut of cucumbers!  Use the dill this week to make quick pickles!

Cucumber and Tomato Salsa

Summer Squash and Zucchini- Zucchini and Tomato Salad

Tomatoes (a couple)- We actually harvested more than we thought so everyone should get at least 2 or more tomatoes.  Even some heirloom tomatoes are turning!  They seem to like the heat and they do not mind the drought conditions.

Curly Kale- Kale can be used in really any raw or cooked dish.  If you don't want the "roughage"  either finely chop really small or steam or saute lightly.

Chopped Kale Salad with other veggies

Kale Zucchini Quinoa Salad

Green Beans- More beans this week as the beans really like that rain we got.  .75lb or a little more. Store in the plastic bag to keep crisp.

Roasted Beets and Charred Green Beans

Broccoli and/or Cauliflower- The broccoli is looking a little better, less cabbage looper laden!  They have now turned into white moths and are flying all over the farm, which is pretty and all, but we want them to go!!!

Dill- This dill is more heady than we would like.  The heat made them bolt when they were quite young but we wanted to make sure we got them to you before it was too late.  Dill is really great with a new potato salad.  The fronds and the heads taste the same, so you can use the whole thing except or the tough stalks.  Some stalks are soft enough to chop up, tho.

 New Potato Salad with Dill

New Red Potatoes- First of the season!  Our potatoes took a big hit this year with the annual problem of Colorado Potato Beetles.  We think the stress of the drought just made them that mush more tasty.  So, the potato yields are lower than we would have like but you will still get a quart of them. These are NOT cured.  They will not hold on the counter so we suggest you eat them soon!

Eggplant- Grilled Eggplant

Cherry Tomatoes- We are unfortunately short this week. will give you extra tomatoes if you dont get your cherry tomatoes. Do not refrigerate, eat fresh and soon!

Appreciating the 2 inch rain we got!

Cucumber patch

lone corn stalk with a little green frog...can you see it!?

What might be in the box next week?

ground cherries!

Cherry tomatoes

tomatoes

cucumbers

summer squash

onions- yellow or white

green beans

peppers

sweet corn

potatoes golden

carrots

Have a great week!
