Fall CSA Box #3

Posted on October 14th, 2019 by Ayla Dodge

Hello Fall Share Members!

This is the 3rd Fall share box.  If you are half share, your box is delivery every other week. Please remember to check if this is your week or not.  Full shares are delivered every week.  When your box is delivered on Thursday, a delivery email is sent out.  EVERY one at that dropsite gets that email, even if you do not get a box that week. So it is important for you to know which weeks you pick up.  Please email me with questions. Here is information on how to access when and where to pick up your box

This week you will notice that you can sign up for Organic Spartan or Cortland Apples!  Our very good friends down the road from us Earthsong Fibers, have lovely organic apples for sale that we will be sticking in the box if you sign up.  If you are like me, it is hard to trust what happens to apples before they get to your kids mouths.  These folks don't use any sprays and also have apples that are not "perfect" because of it.  They are varied in size and have specks and odd shapes sometimes, but they taste great and store well, too. These apples are very good!

We also have oyster and Shiitake Mushrooms for add-on from Northwood Mushrooms in Clayton.  They are Certified Organic and come in a 4oz carton.

Here is what you may have in your box:

POTATOES!! from Threshing Table Farm also a CSA- 2 lbs per member.  Either golden Satina, white kennebec or red Norlands.  These will go great with the leek for a soup!

Carrots Full Share- 1.75 lbs orange carrots.  These are so sweet right now! Stores well in the plastic bag for months!

Red Bulk Beets- Would go great with potatoes and onions for a roasted root dish.

Onions- A mix of Red and Yellow onions.

Watermelon/storage Radish (half)- You can top these and they will store in a container for months.  They are great for a quick kimchi with the cabbage, carrots.

Try this recipe that was in last weeks newsletter:

Roasted Watermelon Radishes with Herbed Tahini Sauce

Red Radishes (Full)- You can also use these radishes with the cabbage for a quick kimchi or a coleslaw.

Cabbage, Radish and Apple Slaw

Broccoli- A smaller amount this week, as the last succession is petering out.

Kale (half)- Nice big bunches of dino kale.  Great as a massaged kale! Kale Salad with Cranberries

Collards (full)-Sauteed Collard Greens with Garlic

Winter Squash variety- At this point in the season we are getting down there on squash so you will get a mix of either: butternut or delicata, acorn or spaghetti.

Red Peppers (still not gone!)-Hopefully you have found a good way to prepare these they are still not gone!

Parsley- Our parlsey has popped again in the cooler weather. Herbed Potato Salad

Red or Green Cabbage- These cabbages last a long time if you cant get to them right away.

Lacto- fermented Kraut recipe

Red cabbage slaw with Tahini

Leeks- On the smaller side, but would still be great in a potato leek soup. You might need to substitute some onions in there, too.

Salad Mix- half pound.

Romaine (Full)- These heads are a little small, but we needed to get them out of the field before they froze.   We ate them on BLTs yesterday and they are crunchy and great!

Salad Turnips (half)- As sweet as ever!  Top them and they will store better, but best eaten fresh within a week or 2. Great sliced on sandwiches or into a salad.

Have a great week!!
