Hello Members and welcome to box 13!

The height of summer crops!  This is the time of year I start anxiously starting to pack in as much preserving as possible, but never enough!  Freezing corn is an easy one, as is freezing whole cherry tomatoes or regular tomatoes. You can pull them out of the freezer and roast them in the winter! Also, you can make any herb into herb ice cubes with some oil, or make pesto and stuff the ice cubes full.

We were able to get away from the farm for a few days with the help of our crew.  (yes, baby chicks came the day before we left!)  We love camping, especially cooking over a campstove!  Some of the things we make were peach cobbler (we do not grow peaches! But they are in season), potato pockets with summer squash, onions and garlic, lots of grilled corn, brats and hot dogs.

Don't forget to sign up for a Fall share!  The first box goes out October 6th!  The main CSA season goes through September 22nd.

In your fall shares you can expect onions, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, kale, carrots, beets, greens, spinach, radishes, turnips, squash, pie pumpkins, popcorn, peppers, leeks, brussels sprouts and more!

Here is what you might find in your box this week:

Broccoli/Cauliflower- We are getting some really nice big heads on some of our plants, but there is not quite enough to go around so we will be giving either cauliflower or broccoli.

Dill bunch with some heads- Last time of dill! Make a quick batch of refrigerator or laco pickles.  Dill is also great with celery and carrots in a tuna, potato or egg salad.

melons (watermelon or cantaloupe)- You will be getting either a yellow or red melon or a cantaloupe!  eat when ripe! The cantaloupe will be ripe if you get one and should be refrigerated.  The watermelon should also be ripe and you can also refrigerate that.  The watermelon can keep much longer in a fridge than an cantaloupe.

pepper sweet- 1 or 2- SO sweet!  Orange or red, italian (long) or bell (rounder))

peppers hot- 3 or 4- A coule habanero and jalapeno.  Maybe you can make a hot sauce/salsa with the tomatoes?  You can dry these, as well, and grind them up later if you do not have a use for them right now.

tomatoes, red and heirloom- It is peak tomato season!  A few lbs per member for sure.  THese should all be ripe and ready to eat!  Refrigerating them turns them more mealy so you should keep them on the counter if possible.  BLT! Pico de Gallo! salsa! caprese! oh my!

cherry tomatoes- These are in full swing and are very sweet and ready to munch on.  If you do not want to use them all right now you can pop them in a freezer bag and take them out and roast them later

Swiss chard- I know, a beautiful yet not the most easy to use vegetable there ever was. Here's a couple recipes. So pretty tho, right?

Creamy Garlic Swiss Chard Chicken

Quick Coconut Curry with Chard and Lentils

radishes or salad turnips- Its getting into the time of year where we basically have all the crops there are to grow ready to pick right NOW!  That includes the start of fall crops like radishes and turnips, but also melons and tomatoes...wow!  So much abundance!

salad mix or kale mix- Either a bag of spring mix or a bunch of mixed smalle kale.

cucumbers- pulling off our new succession now too, we should continue having some cucumbers for the next month.  We hope you have enjoyed the nice cucumbers harvests this year. We feel it has been our strongest cuke crop to date.

summer squash/zucchini- On their way out. Winter squash will be coming soon...

Zucchini Muffins

green or red cabbage- With all the rain, we need to get these guys out of the field or they will split!  They are not the biggest, but they are tasty, tender and have so many uses! We love a quick slaw with shaved peppers, cilantro and a little vinegar, salt and pepper.

Bell pepper and cabbage slaw

green beans/heirloom dragons tongue mix- Heavy of the dragon's tongue this week. These are the sweetest beans we grow and love them raw!  They lose their cool colors when cooked, but still are great either way.

Roasted Beans and cherry Tomatoes

eggplant- https://mountainmamacooks.com/crispy-eggplant-tacos-cilantro-sauce/#tasty-recipes-17235

Willem checking out next years strawberry patch (hopefully in the csa 2023)

last weeks melon harvest in the rain!

have a great week!
