5/20/20 Happy Wednesday! We are now in our third week of the CSA season and we’re excited to see some new signups! Welcome to our farm! Some of you are receiving your second box this week, too. We have been using waxed boxes because it’s easy to wipe off and sanitize. Plus, it keeps the produce fresh while waiting to be picked up. Recycling boxes does help to keep costs down, so we appreciate seeing our members bring the boxes back. This week we have been working hard to transplant the plants from seed to carton and from carton to ground. We have so many plants to choose from to help your garden. We have lots of tomatoes, peppers, greens, herbs, and flowers. We even have some small trees. For your boxes, we have lots of salad varieties and herbs. We also have lots of cabbage, kale, and spinach. Some have received lamb’s quarters. How have you been preparing them? I just toss them in with any greens I’m preparing. Our lists to the CSA are limited, so we hope when you pick up your box you take the time to see what else we have in our store. It’s small but the variety is incredible. We have barley, lentils, quinoa and couscous that are perfect to go with the produce in your box. And, our asparagus is finally growing! The harvest has been slow, but steady, and now we have enough bunches to put on the pick list for your box. If you don’t see it on the list, it means we have sold all we have, but you can check back and reserve a bunch for yourself. Just send me a message at chouston@bma.us and I’ll be sure to save it for you. Also, as a subscribed member to the email list, you will get notifications for our farmstand. If you are already a CSA member, you only have to preview your box and edit to meet your preferences. You can even pause your subscription. You do not need to signup for another membership which harvie will ask you as a default. You will see notifications for farmstand shares available to purchase. These are one-time shares for those who would like an extra box on top of the CSA or for people who do not have a membership but would like to have a box just one time (or every time if you’d like). One-time shares will have a $5 fee on top of the box. These shares are available for everyone. If you need help or have any questions please email me or text me at 304-871-1212. Pick up your box between 2-4pm! Our site says 1pm but 2pm is better for us to ensure your box is ready when you arrive. Thank you! Have a great week and enjoy your box!

About the farm
Founded in 1955, agriculture was a key component of Blue Mountain Academy school program. BMA operated a farm and dairy through the mid-90’s when it shut its farm down due to financial difficulties. In 2012, the school board voted to return to its roots and restart its agriculture program. Starting with a couple of greenhouses and a small vegetable garden, this program has expanded to include, laying hens, approximately 3 acres of veggie gardens, berries, herbs, orchards, herbs, bees, hay, and grain crops. In 2017 a portion of the farm became certified organic, and in 2019 the remaining fields were certified as well.
