Picture Marie (me) trying to tame the 9 foot tall tomato jungle. August = Don't let the heat get to your head! Okra (in a 1/2 pound size and a 1 pound size), tomatoes (several sizes!), cherry tomatoes, and eggplant are the stars of this week here in late summer. We also have pea shoots, microgreens, and some head lettuces and salad mix that we're carefully watering and misting everyday to keep it cool and tasting sweet. August is summer slump for many plants and humans right now, but we're trooping onward with fall planting that we'll harvest the beginning of October. Think of farming as an endurance race, and we're on the troublesome 2/3 mark of August and early September that requires strength and grace. When the weather is favorable, our physical, sweaty, cook-your-brains-into-mush but "quick get it done" in the right phase of plant or animal physiology work becomes so much easier, the plants and animals thrive, and we don't need as much grit to push through.
