D&V Organics CSA
Week 16
We are slowly phasing out of our Summer things and moving closer to our Fall season items each week. On the farm we've been in serious crunch mode with constant planting, both starting new seedlings in the greenhouse and transplanting seedlings into the field. As we expand into greens season, various animals pose a threat to our crops. This year has been a constant battle with deer around the farm. The deer seem to be traveling more frequently through the fields on both sides of the farm than ever before, which poses a challenge because they like to feed on the various crops that we grow, particularly lettuces, radicchio, melons, chard and beets. When our seedlings go out, the biggest threat is groundhogs, which can completely eliminate the small plants with one bite. Both animals are hard to control and we see some level of loss due to their feeding. We use some live traps to relocate the groundhogs, and for the deer our best bet is a minty-rosemary-egg based spray that acts as a deterrent. So far we've been having some limited success, but we are constantly strategizing to protect our newly planted crops.
Enjoy,
