Hello Friends,
Hard to believe that we are headed into Week 4 of the CSA. I hope that you are enjoying the variety and know that I too am looking forward to melon, pepper and tomato season. The cabbages are also putting heads on now. We have 2 more varieties of kale that will make appearances starting with Siberian this week.
So much happens on the farm this time of year and this year promises to bring more organization which should to lead to better produce for our customers. One important aspect of that is a wash barn makeover. Each week I have been cleaning and re-organizing the barn to streamline the washing and packing of the produce. Additionally, this year, we will be voluntarily participating in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) which will help us maintain tighter records of our production and post harvest management. In 2015 took the important step of installing a 3 step water filtration system that includes a large UV light filter. All of the greens have been washed in this water but be sure to take the extra step of washing yours. I know that sometimes soil will stick up in the lettuce leaves, radishes etc. The fruit this week will be cherries.
