Having a heatwave... a tropical heatwave... the temperature is rising... it isn't surprising... name that movie? White Christmas. It doesn't feel like Christmas in July - but the movie Independence Day didn't have as catchy of a song in it.
I've been preparing for my annual good agricultural practices audit for the farm this week. It's a thorough checking of our processes and paperwork to protect consumer safety.
Growing food may seem simple, however incorporating safe practices does not happen in one season. I was the first vegetable farmer to get GAP certified in Connecticut. It took education, planning, and ongoing adjustments to obtain and maintain this high standard.
It's good to visit all the areas around the farm as a little settling activity to remember some of the light-hearted parts of the farm.
Gimlie makes the best of the hot summer days and lets us know he loves his mud hole.
The goats seem impervious to the heat, and I'll find them inside their goat house on the hot second floor just as often as out in the shady spot of their pen.
Do you know how chickens keep cool covered in all those feathers? Yes, they have a shade over their runs, lots of water, and a coop to run to. They regulate their temperatures by fluffing their feathers. They can make a big deal out of rubbing in their dirt baths - we have some inside the chicken house too.
See you soon!
