What’s in the Box?

I usually plant too many beets so of course I overcompensated this season and we haven't had quite enough.  I'm starting to catch up, and we've got a more reasonable amount on offer this week.

The beans are ramping up as are the cherry tomatoes.  The zucchini and cucumbers are still going strong.

We don't grow potatoes anymore (we just don't have enough land), but 4 years ago we found an amazing certified organic producer in Kincardine, called CnA Produce.  Chiel Middlekamp at CnA grows excellent potatoes and we have them available this week, and hopefully for the remainder of summer.

On the Farm

I'm finding snakes all over the farm this year.  Last week I was moving a seedling tray in the greenhouse and a snake literally fell out of the tray.  While it can give me a start, I love having snakes on the farm.  They eat rodents and they eat slugs, both major pests in the garden.

This time of year is known as 'second spring'.  It's a time full of major transplanting and seeding jobs we need to get done on time so that we can have tons of delicious food straight through until Christmas.

Are you wondering what you can still plant in your garden?  Here's a great resource, just put in your first frost date (which is typically Oct 9 on our farm): https://www.johnnyseeds.com/growers-library/calculator-planting-dates-fall-harvest-crops.html

That’s all for now, happy eating until next time,

Farmer Tamara
