ON THE FARM

I can barely believe we are here, at the Winter Share!  How is it October already?  How have we already tended vegetables and sent them into the world for the last 27 weeks?  My goodness, time flies!  It's truly been a glorious farming season, though truth be told, nearly all the rain has missed us, or just danced along the edges of our farm.  I've never seen a drier (or warmer) start to fall.

This past week was a bit wild as several folks on the farm were ill and unable to be here.  Somehow we managed to harvest, wash, pack and distribute beautiful shares to over 200 hundred families despite being so short staffed.  It was nothing short of miraculous, and the farmers that were here pushing through are CHAMPIONS.

On Monday we plan to harvest all of the sweet potatoes.  We will cure them at nearly 30 degrees celcius for a couple of weeks until the skin thickens and the flesh sweetens.  Look for them in shares the end of the month, or beginning of November.  Until then eat all of the squash!

We've planted all the baby greens for winter shares already.  Things grow much slower in the fall, so crops that might take 28 days in summer can take 2, 3 or even 4 weeks longer depending on when they were planted.

What's in the Box?

We are offering 3 kinds of squash in honor of Thanksgiving: celebration (like an acorn), butternut and pie pumpkin.

I planted a lot of cauliflower, and it's producing beautifully.  Hopefully we'll have a steady stream of it over the next few weeks.

Red cabbage is on the menu for the first time this fall.  It doesn't store as well as green cabbage so we'll offer it all first before moving onto green.

The swiss chard is stealing all our hearts on the farm.  It's so darn pretty (and tasty).

That's all for now, happy thanksgiving, and happy eating until next time!
