It's amazing how every year it seems a switch gets flipped on for the farm. Two weeks ago all the crops felt like they were growing at a snails pace and we thought are they even going to make it. Customers at the market and members kept asking, "How are things growing?" and I would respond, "The crops are taking their time this year, but the weeds are loving it." However, in the last week, the switch got flipped on! The crops are now looking big and beautiful and more variety is starting to come in. Very shortly, we will probably have zucchini and summer squash coming out our ears, so get ready! It is a very beautiful time of year on the farm though, once things really start popping and the weeds are under control. Our employee, Nick, mentioned that it's like painting a picture on the landscape and he's right. Each week things change around here and if you drive by on a weekly basis or come to the farm for pick up, you will notice it.
This time of year is also some of the busiest times we have as we start harvesting more, packing boxes, attending farmers markets, weeding, pruning, trellising, watering (and more watering), all while trying to enjoy the northern Michigan summer we all love. Each week we've been able to tackle a majority of the to-do list, which is pretty impressive, and have been able to do that with our four employees we have this summer. A big thank you to Nick, Derek, Rebecca and Elizabeth; we couldn't do it all without them!
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!!
