We're excited to kick the season off this week! It's sure been a cool spring - we just had another frost advisory (two this week for those of you counting). Of course, that means things are growing a bit slower than normal, but despite this slow growth, everything looks awesome! The stable temperatures have kept things growing nice and steady, a sure improvement from the 90's we had last May that threw everything out of whack.
To give you an idea of just how far behind the weather is from last year, here's a picture of last year's lilac blooms on 5/29.
Here they are again from this year:
It's these types of years we're happy to have hoophouses - despite the cold weather we've already got tomatoes and peppers setting on all of the plants; we haven't even attempted to plant our outside ones yet!
We're excited to be wrapping up most of our construction projects for the year so we can get focused on farming. For those of you that may not be aware, we've basically relocated the farm to our new location this spring, which means we've built everything from the ground up, including fencing, irrigation, tunnels, etc. It's been a project, but we're happy to say we're almost done - at least for a few months!
We get a bunch more help around the farm this week, which will be nice. We've had John working with us since mid-March; but starting this week we'll get four more sets of hands to help us get everything done. John is planning to start a farm himself next year, so he picked a great year to come work with us - he's gotten to see what goes into starting up a whole new farm and has learned more about fencing and irrigation than he probably wanted to!
