Farm Happenings for January 25, 2021

Posted on January 20th, 2021 by Derek Dumont

No one likes waste. No one likes trash. At Harvie Farms Pittsburgh we are no different. So we are always thinking about ways to minimize waste and trash (did you notice we started using green compostable bags for some items? ). That’s why we love being able to customize your farm and butcher boxes for you. We know that the more control you have over the contents of your food preferences, the less food you will end up wasting. And we can all feel good about that.

That’s also why we love reusing our boxes, insulated liners, and ice packs. With so much of everyone’s purchases being home delivered these days, we know first hand just how much waste we can all generate with single use containers.

We can’t eliminate waste. But we can reduce it. Returning your box, insulated liner, and ice packs is easy and environmentally responsible. And now starting this week, we are relying on a new box design that eliminates the use of tape to close the boxes. So all you have to do is unfold them to send them back to us with the courier. Our hope is that by making it easier for you, we will be able to reuse more packaging supplies than ever before.

In 2020, we got an average of about 1.9 uses per cardboard box. Let’s see if we can get that average well over 2 uses per box in 2021!

Check out this quick video of Derek showing off how easy it is to use our new tape-free boxes. And while you're there, be sure to join our Facebook group. It is an awesome place to share your cooking successes and follow along as others share theirs too.

New Products

  • Celeriac (celery root)
  • Napa Cabbage
  • Tofu - same product but more availability this week!
  • Rosemary
  • And did you catch that we added dried pears and apples?

Bread Add-On Share: Farm Bread, Mediterra Bakehouse Pain au Levain is considered the quintessential French sourdough bread.  To give ours its rich and complex flavor, we mix wheat and white flour, then add our levain sourdough starter.  It’s honeycomb crumb and delicate tang make it very versatile. Farm bread is the perfect complement to a soup or stew, and makes a delicious sandwich.

Coffee Add-on Share: Commonplace Coffee's Bohemian Blend.

DESIGN: A blend for those who want a bold coffee.
CURRENTLY: Red Badger, Indonesia; Koke, Ethiopia
Think: Crisp, apricot with a medium body.

If you’re looking for a coffee with a lot of zing and pep, look no further than the Bohemian Blend. A big, strong coffee with a lot of body and a good deal of sweet acidity, this is our nod to the berets, overstuffed armchairs, and clove cigarettes from coffee shops of days gone by. Cheers, old sport!

Be safe and eat well!
