This week we wanted to take a moment to highlight one of our partner farmers who is playing a big role in our CSA this year. We have mentioned Myron Metzger of Berry Hill Farm before, but it’s time we give him a proper introduction! Myron and his dad, Marvin, started growing blueberries in 2003. It wasn't too long before they began to add other produce to their offerings, and now if you stop by their stand at the Fort Wayne Farmers Market you will find a wide variety of herbs, greens, and vegetables for sale. You will likely recognize the name Berry Hill Farm from one of your past farm shares. We are pleased to be offering several of their crops this year. This week we are featuring their microgreens, leeks, and--new this week!--shallots.
If you visit Berry Hill Farm and make the short walk from the barn to the gardens, it's immediately evident that their team cares a lot about being good stewards of their land. They utilize no-till gardening techniques as much as they can, and their greenhouses are quite impressive. (Side note: the Metzgers are also carpenters, and signs of their craftsmanship can be seen all over their property.)
At the start of this year's CSA season we moved our farm share packing operation to Berry Hill. This has been a huge improvement as it has allowed us to have the space to make the process more organized, efficient, and enjoyable. We sure appreciate Myron letting us take over his barn for a few hours every Thursday! We are grateful for our partnership with Berry Hill Farm, as well as several other local farmers and food producers. It goes to show that there really isn’t room for competition when we're all working together towards a common goal.
