If you have been out to visit the farm in the last twenty or so years, you may have noticed the flower garden we have in the east yard by the farmhouse. This is an anniversary garden that Jeff and Kathy planted to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. It’s full of perennial flowers, and the pink and purple palette changes throughout the season as different varieties of flowers bloom in late spring and then give way to mid-season and late-season blossoms. Right now, autumn favorites like dahlias and asters are really showing off. The dahlias were a new addition a couple of years ago when Erin (one of our rock star farm employees) brought extra tubers from her garden. Kathy really enjoys growing flowers that can handle the cooler temperatures of fall and squeeze the last bit of color out of the season.
Kathy’s love of flowers has led to her take on the role of "bouquet delivery service" for the CSA this year. Every week, she visits Hungry Dog Farm in Fort Wayne to pick up bouquets for our farm shares. This is the first year we have partnered with Andy and Elaina at Hungry Dog, and we have been really impressed with their flower arrangements. They started their farm in 2020 to grow flowers and produce for their own CSA program and we lucky to have them as part of our CSA, too! If you haven’t ordered a bouquet yet, we suggest adding one to your share soon before the season is over.
And don’t forget, you can come check out the flowers and everything else growing on the farm on October 7th during our CSA potluck picnic. Click here to RSVP for the event. We hope you can join us!
