Farm Happenings for August 17, 2021 week 7 - The Patty Pan - demic

Posted on August 14th, 2021 by Mike Milsom

They facinated me.  From a very young age I just felt drawn and comfortable around them. They seemed both wise and earnest. Faithful to their tasks and in sync with the seasons.  I admired their thick hands, weather lined faces and delighted in their dry wit.

I really like being a farmer and I am happiest when I am in the field. It is a learning curve but I hope that I am able to do this long enough that when some young buck, newly married comes alongside drawn as I have been to the field. Then, I would just look out over the horizon meaningfully for a long moment with seasoned eyes, like I am searching for something.

"What do you see?" he would ask earnestly.

"Nothing....  well....just odd... never seen the geese fly this early.  Funny that."

Later that afternoon the young man's wife would find him out on the driveway frantically rolling out the snow tires.

"Why are you doing that now??"

He would shrug and say, "I don't know, but old farmer Mike down the road said he'd never seen the geese fly this early. This just seemed like the right thing to do"

(wry grin)

Rest assured we are a long way from winter tire season.  Karen's garlic is in the mix this week along with an abundance of patty pans. If you have never had and you fancy yourself handy on the grill...this is a go to for this time of season.  So simple, and yet delicious. Basted with a little garlic butter and salt..mmmm' mmmm's. That's how you do it.

Corn and peaches have been very popular choices this past two weeks.  We are sourcing locally from off the farm to broaden what we can offer folks so that our boxes remain interesting and full.  Our own tomatoes are starting to ripen so that is on the horizon.  Peppers are starting to arrive..along with eggplant.

Many of you are travelling. Enjoy this special family time. We'll be here when you get back and at this long after the geese fly :-)

Enjoy.
