Plant, harvest, repeat! Farm Share Week 2

Posted on June 15th, 2020 by Kim Barker

Hello farm friends!

We had such a great time meeting everyone last week and distributing our first week of veggies! We’re excited to do some more meeting and reconnecting this week with our bi-weekly members who are picking up for the first time. If you picked up last week, we hope you are enjoying your first share!

For folks picking up for the first time this week, you might want to check out our last week's newsletter here https://www.harvie.farm/happenings/mulberry-moon-farm/15557/spring-is-green-farm-share-week-1 for a bit more information about ourselves and this week's veggies.

Beyond harvesting, we got to take care of a lot of other items on our to-do list last week. We trellised our peas and added some more compost to our beans and peas to give them a boost. We’re super excited about the trellis because, while we adore peas and are pretty sure most of you do to, they are one of our most time-consuming veggies to harvest. The trellis should make things a bit easier.

We finally got to pruning and tying up all our tomatoes. We have two hoophouses which hold our tomatoes – one hoophouse is half cherry tomatoes, half seedling nursery, the other is full of regular tomatoes. They are growing like crazy. We put landscape fabric in between the rows so that the weeds do not also grow like crazy.

We got lettuce, potatoes, leeks, parsley and spring onions transplanted into the field, three beds of carrots seeded, and bed prepped for next week.

Spring onions ready to harvest, with newly planted spring onions beyond.

In the greenhouse, we seeded more kale, mixed greens and lettuce, fennel and – if you can believe it – fall cabbage! Looks like another hot and dry week coming up – thank goodness for our irrigation system!

Veggies This Week

Still on the roster this week are lettuce and mixed greens, which we aim to have available every week of the summer. We have kohlrabi again this week (which I want to rename ‘garden apple’, because it really is sweet and refreshing like an apple – Rosemary thought it WAS an apple!), and probably next week too and then it will be done until the fall.

Kohlrabi, aka, the Garden Apple

This will be the last week for our green garlic, which you can easily use as a substitute in recipes that call for garlic. Green garlic makes way for garlic scapes! These curly spears will make garlic seeds if we don’t harvest them. By harvesting them, we encourage the bulb of the garlic to get nice and big. They’re delicious grilled, or made into pesto. You can also slice them and add them to anything you’re cooking for a garlic flavour boost.

Radishes, spring onions, and beets (with a limited availability) are new additions for the week. You can cook the beet tops just like chard or spinach – they’re in the same family! Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage are getting close to maturity in the field and we’ll likely have them next week! And we’re hoping for peas in a couple weeks.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this Thursday from 4pm-7pm! You'll have until Tuesday at 9pm to customize your share. In the meantime, happy eating!

Your farmers,

Kim and Alex
