Farm Share Week 16 - Frost

Posted on September 21st, 2020 by Kim Barker

We got our first frost this week! It was earlier this year than last year. Fortunately, we have row cover which we used to cover our beans, which were the main crop we were worried about getting damaged. We didn't have to worry about our heartier fall crops, and our tomatoes and peppers were safe in the hoophouse. Take that, frost!

A few extra goodies this week - we have some giant pumpkins that needed to be processed so we peeled, cubed and bagged them. These are sweet cooking pumpkins. You can purchase these as extras - pop them in your freezer and make soups and pies in the winter!

We are selling corn stalk bunches for fall/thanksgiving/halloween decor.

(It says squash but it's pumpkin)

And we have bulk beans for sale - selling in 3lb increments. Preserve or freeze for winter! To freeze, remove the stem end and snap the bean into two (we like to do this while sitting around watching tv or a movie). Then, blanch in hot water for only a couple minutes. Afterwards, flash freeze them by spreading them out on a baking sheet in the freezer. Once they've frozen, put them into freezer bags and you're done!

Make sure to take a look at customizing your share - lots of extra beets, beans, and radishes this week, as well as cilantro, basil, scallions, and garlic that can be swapped in or added to your share.

In the field this week, we are planting greens, spinach, and lettuce in our hoophouse where we took a few tomato rows out. Field clean up and prepping beds for next year is also on the to-do list. Soon we'll begin working again on the infrastructure projects we had to abandon in the spring. It's an exciting time of year for us, as we start to have time to step back and envision next season.

Enjoy your veggies!

Kim and Alex
