Farm Share Week 12 - Summer Veggies Going Strong

Posted on August 23rd, 2021 by Kim Barker

Hi farm friends,

*So much to choose from this week, so don't forget to customize your share*

This week marks our final greenhouse seeding of the season! Sarah who has taken on the role of Greenhouse Manager has been working hard seeding in there since April, so it's hard to believe that there will be no more after this. Seeding is such a huge part of our operation and we are so grateful to Sarah for taking on all the responsibility involved there.

Field plantings are also slowing down. Other than greens, lettuce, and spinach and radish there isn't too much more left to go in the field. Soon, we will be starting to plant things for the fall in our hoophouses. Sadly, that will mean having to take out most of our tomatoes (so pleeease enjoy them while they are here!). But the greenhouses will continue to yield lettuce, salad mix, kale, chard, radishes and spinach through til December. In fact, we plan on running a Fall Farm Share program this year, with limited membership. It will last 6 weeks from the beginning of November onwards. I will be sending an email with more details when we start taking sign ups.

Hard to imagine fall is around the corner with the sort of heat we have been getting! It's time to get out the sprinklers, and keep hydrated ourselves as we battle the weeds.

Veggie Highlights

Summer veggies are still in their peak out in the field. We have lots of tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and zucchinis. Maybe you are a bit afraid of eggplant - but now is the time to give it a try! Try a ratatouille or add it to your pasta! We also have another round of carrots this week and our trusty beets. Spring onions are doing beautifully and we will have them regularly now for awhile. We still have some big cabbages left from earlier this season - available to swap into your share.

We've got some bulk basil available this week (maybe you want to freeze pesto for the winter!) and sunflower bunches from our sunflower cover crop.

Thanks as always for your support - and happy eating!

Your farmer,

Kim
