Farm Share Week 15 - September

Posted on September 13th, 2021 by Kim Barker

Hi farm friends,

September arrives on the farm like a breath of relief. Just like in the spring, it is a time of change, and those changes stir us out of our head-down hot-humid sore-back summer blur. We can pause, and look around. The energy around us is rising - but unlike spring, it is the energy of closing, rather than opening. It brings with it a certain sweetness; the promise of rest. Oh, this is much still to do. But darker mornings force us to rise later, and cooler air helps us move throughout the day. There is time again to think - to take account of our season, make peace with our failures, and begin to dream about next season. Sweet September, I've never loved you more since I started to farm.

We bid goodbye to our tomatoes this week. They were certainly not our best crop this year and we've learned many lessons to apply for next season. Soon, the greenhouse will be full of salad mix, lettuce, radishes, spinach, bok choy, chard, and kale, for the fall and winter. This is the the first time we have made a concentrated effort to have fall and winter produce. So it is also a learning process for us. We're looking forward to seeing the results.

Veggie Highlights

This is a beautiful time when summer crops are still here, but fall crops are arriving, bringing diversity to our harvest. We still have peppers, eggplants, and hot peppers. Remember to customize your share, because there are some items (like jalapenos, chili peppers, shishito peppers, and others) that aren't automatically put into shares but available to swap in or add. We have bok choy again this week (no more of this for awhile), and a new crop - white hakurei turnips. These sweet turnips are mild enough to be eaten raw (try them or a salad), and they can be cooked as well. Kohlrabi is making an appearance again as well! We are harvesting our rainbow carrots this week and are hopeful for a good yield. We harvested the first of our our winter squash - spaghetti squash. There are a few available to swap into your shares - not too many this week, but more is to come. This week we harvested the last of our melons, and we will soon be harvesting our potatoes.

Happy eating, until next week!

Your farmer,

Kim
