2022 Farm Share Week 9 - Goodbye July, Hello Vacation

Posted on August 1st, 2022 by Kim Barker

Hi farm friends!

Lots of customization options available again this week so make sure to log in before midnight on Tuesday to get the most out of your share.

On The Farm

One of the running jokes in the market gardening community is how it is impossible to take a vacation in the summer. And yet here we are, taking a vacation. Maybe it is my stubbornness and Alex’s flexibility. Maybe his head-down determination and my passion. Maybe it’s all the to-do lists we wrote. It’s likely our ability to let go of control. And it is very much so the wonderful humans who have chosen to work here on our farm.

So I write this in a small cottage on the French River, with the sounds of my extended family filling the room. I feel pretty fortunate. A big reason why Alex and I chose to run our own business is the freedom it gives us. But in reality, the farm is a very unreasonable and unrelenting boss. Taking a vacation was not easy, physically or mentally – we had to run ourselves pretty hard the week before, getting soil prepped so that when we come back we’re ready to plant, tying up loose ends. And we had to write a lot of lists and prepare for lots of different situations. I can see how it feels impossible.

But the farming season is far from over, and the summer is short, so taking the time to have a break and enjoy it will hopefully give us energy to go forward. And since having kids it has felt even more important to take the time to be able to focus on them and give them different experiences.

We’re very, very thankful to have a crew of very encouraging folks who we can trust the farm to, so we’re able to have this sweet cottage vacation. I’ll be looking forward to a week with very few on the t-do list other than swim, eat, and nap.

Veggie Highlights

Spring Onions are new this week but other than that we continue with the variety we’ve had before. Our second cucumber and zucchini planting is starting to produce so for the first time ever we can continue our zuke and cuke harvest well into August!

Have you tried frying up some garlic and tomatoes until they're slightly saucy and eating it on toast? One of our favourite lunches these days.

Happy August everyone!

Your farmer, Kim
