Welcome to week 14 of the Farm Share! It is officially September and fall vibes are here on the farm. The blue jays are loud and the air is cooler in the mornings. This is a time of year on the farm when summer and fall begin to converge. We still have our summer crops but are beginning to harvest our fall ones – like our gorgeous fall cabbages! Make sure to get on there and customize, because you can choose whether your share is going to look more like summer or like fall. And there are some good tomato preserving options there too!
On the Farm
We said goodbye to Tristan last week, his 4th summer here on the farm. And we also said a partial goodbye to Dean and Breckin. All three teens are going back to school, but Dean and Breckin are still going to help us out a couple evenings a week. We were very fortunate to have their hard work, energy, and humour this summer. They learned a lot and worked hard!
As I said above, fall is approaching. Our winter luxury pumpkins are already orange in the field, our cabbages and the first of our broccoli are ready, and winter radishes, leeks, and turnips are well on their way.
Veggie Highlights
Bulk Cherry Tomatoes We have bulk cherry tomatoes available this week! Toss them in oil, salt, garlic, and basil. Then roast them in the oven till they get soft and split. You can then freeze them and take them out for an awesome tomato sauce in the middle of winter!
Dill We’ve got lots of dill right now and did you know you can also freeze this? We like to chop it up, drop it in a mason jar, and freeze.
Cabbages and Broccoli Fall is saying hello with our first cooler-weather brassicas. Enjoy the first of our broccoli and cabbage!
It’s a busy week for us with less staff and our own little Rosemary beginning JK. So I’ll keep this newsletter short and sweet. Enjoy your veggies!
Your farmer,
Kim
