2022 Farm Share Week 19 - Farewell to Some!

Posted on October 11th, 2022 by Kim Barker

It’s always hard to believe it when we come to the final weeks of our share. Our lives have been consumed with vegetable growing for so long that it takes a moment to realize that the lives of so many plants no longer rest on our shoulders. We’re looking forward to a slower pace of life over the winter. But of course, by the time February arrives we’ll be dreaming about fresh tomatoes again. To the members who are having their final share today, we bid you farewell with a big giant hug of thanks. Each of you are special, and you should give yourself a pat on the back for going out of your way to support your local farmers. We really see you and appreciate your efforts. Thanks for being with us this season.

On The Farm

Since we had some frost last week, you might notice our veggies getting sweeter – the carrots, hakurei turnips, beets, kale, even radishes. When the frost comes, these vegetables convert their starches to sugar, which act as an anti-freezing agent for their cells. Pretty cool, eh? Our kids are especially enjoying the hakeuri turnip this time of year, you can really taste the sweetness.

This time of year involves taking out a lot of landscape fabric from the field. Lucy, our dog enjoys running after us and catching mice and voles, and we’re thankful for the help. We are slowly getting all our root crops out of the field, and starting to prepare for our fall garlic planting. In our hoophouses, the spinach and greens are starting to take off.

Veggie Highlights

We have some NEW items from Daryl Myny, an organic grower in Aylmer who works with the HOPE eco-collective of Amish farmers in the area. We are purchasing red onions and sweet potatoes from him. Pretty excited to be able to offer these local organic items through the share. Usually we do produce our own onions but as you know we had an off year for those. Sweet potatoes are a whole other game, quite intensive to grow, cure, and store. So we are happy to be able to support another local farmer and get something that is not within our scale to grow. These won’t be automatically added to your shares this week, but can be swapped in or added.

2023

A quick note about next season: as a current member, you’ll get a chance to renew your membership for next season before we open it up to new members. That’ll happen in early January, so keep an eye out for an email then.

Alex and I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend.
