Farm Share 2023 Week 16:

Posted on September 18th, 2023 by Kim Barker

Welcome to Week 16 of the Farm Share!

2 weeks left til our Farm Share Harvest Celebration Potluck on October 1st from 11am-3pm!

It's time to customize your share! You have til Tuesday at midnight to do so. Don't forget to return your green bag!

On The Farm

Tomatoes are coming out, spinach is going in. The last outdoor planting of salad mix is going in the ground as well as some late seeded fall radish and turnip. We are patiently waiting for our fall crops to come in, perhaps a little later than usual this year; 2-3 weeks still til hakurei turnips, kohlrabi, radish, fennel.

Field clean up and fall bed prep remain on the top of our to-do list this week.

One crop failure we've had to deal with this fall is broccoli. Most of it got eaten by some unknown creature (critter or insect, we still don't really know; and the wet soil in the late summer didn't help either).

The truth is, when growing vegetables, there are so many things out of our control that can cause a crop to fail. It's why we grow such a wide diversity of crops; so that when it's going bad for one crop, another crop can stand in for it.

Veggie Highlights

We are bringing in the first of the season's winter squash from HOPE Eco-farms. This year, we made the decision to stop growing squash. It requires a lot of space to grow the quantities of it that we need. Instead, we are ordering it in from HOPE Eco-farms which is a collective of organic growers from the Amish community in Aylmer. This week's quantities are small because I didn't know how much to expect per bushel! But we'll have more in 1-2 weeks.

Also available as extras this week are half bushels (30 lbs) of roma tomatoes from Common Ground Farm.

Another thing we are bringing in from Common Ground Farm this week are beets! We've never done this before, but this summer has been hard on our beets. Our last two successions didn't add up to much. I think the excessive rains were part of the problem. We know you like beets though, so we thought this might be a nice addition to the share.

Peppers are still our most abundant crop at the moment! Our kids are eating so many peppers. They're one of my fave vegetables so I am a happy farmer!!

We also have lots of bok choy, salad mix, spring onions, kale and chard, cabbages, and more.  Tomatoes are dwindling, as most plants are being pulled out of the greenhouse. We saved the green ones to ripen in our seedling house - or you can order them as green tomatoes in your share!

Hope you enjoy your veggies this week!

Thanks for keeping us growing.

Your farmer,

Kim
