Week 13: In The Weeds

Posted on August 22nd, 2020 by Becky

This is such a weedy time of year.  There are particular parts of the season when we look so beautiful that we are ready to host a wedding -- usually in late June and early July and when we look like we absolutely know what we are doing. This is not that time. I took a fellow farmer around on a golf cart tour today and I felt like I had to distract him so he wouldn't see the chaos.  It happens every August -- picking vegetables and planting for the fall take up almost all our time, and the weeds just keep on growing, night after night and day after day. They have nothing better to do.  This is why farmers keep their mowing equipment in good repair -- it's a mental health issue.  Our good humor and sense of self is restored when we drive around the farm chopping down all the weeds that are going to seed, and trim the grass to a uniform height. It makes us feel like good farmers again.

Canning Tomatoes Are Available

Boxes will be $25 (about $1/lb). We can supply about 5 boxes per day, Thursday through Sunday, available by sign up only. These tomatoes will a mix of varieties, and will be very ripe and need to be used ASAP. They are seconds--expect some bad spots and blemishes. Boxes must be picked up at the roadside stand between 10am and 4pm. We can arrange for after-hours pick up with notice. To reserve your boxes, please email becky@potomacvegetablefarms.com with your order and note:
Your name,
What day you would like to pick up your tomatoes,
How many boxes you would like, and
What roadside stand you will be picking up at (Purcellville or Vienna).

Once Becky emails you back confirming we have them available at the time you wish, you're all set!
