Week 14: Permanence (concrete) and Fleeting Joy (tomatoes)

Posted on August 26th, 2020 by Becky

It took a long time to get all the pieces in place--the fill dirt, the electric line, the gravel, the rebar, but the hardest part was getting the time and the people to line up. While every other person on the farm was at the farmers markets or picking vegetables for the markets, Stephen had a crew of volunteers and hired professionals assembled at 7:30 on Saturday morning, waiting for the concrete trucks to show up. Everything was ready, and he was sitting by the side of the road, looking up and down the highway for the long overdue trucks. In the end, they finally arrived and the concrete pour began.

History was made again. We haven’t made a slab of this magnitude for decades. This one is going to be the foundation for the latest shop so all the tools in Loudoun can be in one central location and so they can fix tractors on a clean floor, and perhaps one day even have a heated space indoors for mechanical work in the winter. Back in the old days, Stephen’s grandfather, Tony Newcomb, was the visionary who decided when and where a concrete slab was needed. One of the earliest heavy duty floors was created for our roadside stand in Vienna, on Leesburg Pike. That was in 1971. Later when a building inspector came he said that slab was sufficiently robust to hold up a skyscraper. 50 years later the concrete is still just as good as new, and the building still stands--not as good as new.

Last chance to sign up for Autumn CSA! We are nearly full, and sign ups will close soon.

Just like that, canning tomatoes are no longer in robust supply. If you are still hoping for a box of seconds, please email becky@potomacvegetablefarms.com to find out what might be available. The logistics are all still the same: Boxes will be $25 (about $1/lb). Pick up is Thursday-Sunday by reservation only. These tomatoes will a mix of varieties, and will be very ripe and need to be used ASAP. They are seconds--expect some bad spots and blemishes. Boxes must be picked up at the roadside stand between 10am and 4pm. We can arrange for after-hours pick up with notice. To reserve your boxes, please email becky@potomacvegetablefarms.com with your order and note:
Your name,
What day you would like to pick up your tomatoes,
How many boxes you would like, and
What roadside stand you will be picking up at (Purcellville or Vienna).

Once Becky emails you back confirming we have them available at the time you wish, you're all set!
