Hey there,
Hope you the Canada Day long weekend treated you well and that the beautiful weather on the monday made up for the showers on Saturday.
Another big round of planting and weeding this week. Alot of the winter roots and cabbages will be planted or transplanted this week, trying to really bulk up and extend the season for those delicious roots and brassicas. Extra onions, rutabega, carrots, beets, parsnips, and parsley root going in, with a guarantee of staying in the ground for frost to make them a bit sweeter before harvest. Last year was an incredibly mild fall, which was amazing for so many other plants, but the carrots and parsnips didn't get the chance for that frost kiss before harvest.
In another week we will plant some of the fall brassica roots that mature better as it is cooling down, such as winter radishes, storage turnips, and daikon.
It may seem early to be thinking about fall already, but it is crazy how quickly the season goes, it is already July and it feels like the planting season is half over. But speaking of prepping for fall so early, pickling cucumbers are about to explode! Many of the other delicious canning veggies are looking good too, just did a big clean up in the hoop house for the tomatoes and they are coming along. Peppers and eggplant, which we seems to have a ton or non depending on the year are looking good! And last but not lease, the zukes are coming in hot! Before you we all start drowning in them, check out quick pickles, zucchini marmalade, relish, muffins/loaf, fritters, grilled, stuffed, spiralized, boats, etc they are so versatile and freeze well, so get these in your belly or freezer!
Thanks,
