Shifting Gears

Posted on August 30th, 2020 by Lynne Schultz

Hello,

What a week? The kids finally went back to school. And not going to lie it was a great feeling to see them get back into a routine and away from each other. Although this week they are at home doing online line learning. With them away at school Josh and I able to get more accomplished. Lilly has been mom's helper or has been going to grandma's house. With fall almost here things on the farm start to shift. We are starting to prep for fall harvest and starting about winter (firewood since we think we might actually get a winter). We will start this week harvesting winter squash and pumpkins that are ready. It will be a week or two before we get all winter squash into the CSA lineup. Summer crops are still cranking out so that will not stop for a while.

We got our last chickens for the year. These are Sadie meat chickens and ducks for fair which yesterday we did confirmation that they are going to get to show. So that is plus. That means a daily washing  and walking of her steer which she has been doing for the last two weeks.

Our fall and winter greens and root crops are looking great as long as I can keep the ground hogs out. This week we are cleaning out the one of the high tunnels and the green house and start planting in there for the winter. These are the back up picking areas just in case we get a lot of snow this winter and we don't have to dig out the snow to pick.

Hope everyone has a great and safe week,

The Schultz
