Farm Happening Oct 30 delivery

Posted on October 25th, 2021 by Jenny Berkenbosch

Hi Sundog Farm Box subscribers!  We hope you are growing hungry again for some of the fall/winter veg that is still abundant and delicious at this time.  We finished harvesting everything from the fields last week so there are no more perishables like lettuce or peas which succumbed to the frost (although we still have some swiss chard and kale), but plenty of the storable crops like potato, parsnip and beet.  There are some crops that we wish we had for you like cabbage, celery and brussels sprouts of which we experienced crop failures, and some crops we wish we had more of like garlic and onion which are in short supply (we have set aside amounts to spread out over the next 3 deliveries), but overall there are still many things to choose from for which we hope you will be satisfied.  You may want to check out some of the products on the extras page like the dried herbs or pickles, things that are handy to have around and don't really go bad in the pantry.

Aside from the crops we have in stock, and our wonderful customers that buy them, we are also thankful for some extra time this fall (having finished the harvest earlier) to prepare for next year.  This has meant time to build our no-till deep mulch beds in which we expect we will be able to plant twice as much in the same space compared to this year.  Hopefully that will mean more onions and garlic and other things and also less weeding for the same amount of produce, and also better quality!

Every week we list through the harvie site what produce we have to sell.  We also take the the opportunity to fill your boxes with something you might not ordinarily buy, perhaps because it is unfamiliar.  It is a way of us connecting you to our land in terms of creating an awareness of what valuable food staples generally grow well here or even with what worked just this year because of whatever happened with the weather etc.  This week we are putting more buttercup squash in your boxes knowing many of you may be trying it for the first time.  Check out the many delicious recipes available online.  For potatoes, we are featuring the Red Norland, a white flesh, red skin variety. We hope you all enjoy!
