CSA WEEK 3

Posted on June 15th, 2021 by Lacey Arnold

Heat waves and hail?! Weather-wise, we’ve truly seen it all in the last week, and the season has only just begun. This year’s asparagus season came to an abrupt halt with the dropping of temperatures toward the end of last week, and monsoon-season weather early this week meant a delay of picking. Fortunately, the rain came just in time – the fields out here are thirsty, and this was a much-needed deluge. Our strawberries are still thriving, and with sunshine predicted for the days ahead, they’ll be as sweet and juicy as ever.

While unpredictable weather can be frustrating and even devastating to farmers whose crops are decimated by a sudden storm, part of what makes a CSA so sustainable is that we can sell what we still have growing in order to move forward. We strive to deliver what we plan to harvest from week to week, but flexibility is part of the fun – and it’s what allows us as a farm to thrive.

Pick-Your-Own Strawberries: Fun for the Whole Family Our u-pick berry fields are open! Come stop by from 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday, or 8am-5pm on Sundays. Come visit our farm and try some of the sweetest strawberries in western MA straight from the source. You can check our website to find our picking hours and for updates on field conditions.

FEATURED ITEM THIS WEEK… Green Curly Kale!

Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there – per calorie, it contains more iron than beef does! It is also an excellent source of fiber, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and K. The curly green variety in particular makes delicious kale chips, pesto, and salads, and it’s great in dishes that would normally use spinach such as creamy pastas, lasagna, curries, soups, and stews.
